About Minecraft Potion Brewing

Potion brewing is a complex but rewarding mechanic in Minecraft that allows players to create magical concoctions with various effects. These potions can provide buffs like increased strength, speed, or healing, or they can be used offensively against enemies.

Brewing Basics

To start brewing potions, you'll need a brewing stand, which is crafted using 1 blaze rod and 3 cobblestone blocks. The brewing stand must be powered with blaze powder to function. You'll also need glass bottles filled with water as the base for all potions.

Potion Types

There are three main types of potions in Minecraft:

  • Normal Potions: These are consumed by the player to apply effects to themselves.
  • Splash Potions: Created by adding gunpowder to a normal potion, these can be thrown to affect multiple entities in an area.
  • Lingering Potions: Created by adding dragon's breath to a splash potion, these create a cloud of effect that lasts for a short time.

Modifiers

You can modify potions with the following ingredients:

  • Redstone Dust: Extends the duration of a potion's effects.
  • Glowstone Dust: Enhances (increases the level of) a potion's effects, but typically reduces duration.
  • Fermented Spider Eye: Corrupts a potion, generally reversing or changing its effects.

Use the interactive brewing guide above to look up every potion in Minecraft. Each entry includes effects, durations, and step-by-step brewing instructions, including Normal, Splash, and Lingering variants.

Frequently Asked Questions - Minecraft Potion Brewing

How do you make potions in Minecraft?

Craft a brewing stand (1 Blaze Rod + 3 Cobblestone), fuel it with Blaze Powder, put Water Bottles in the stand, brew Nether Wart to make Awkward Potions, then brew an effect ingredient (like Blaze Powder for Strength or Sugar for Swiftness). Use Redstone to extend duration, Glowstone to strengthen effects, Gunpowder for splash potions, and Dragon's Breath for lingering potions.

How do you make a Potion of Strength in Minecraft?

To make a Potion of Strength, you need an Awkward Potion and Blaze Powder. First, brew Nether Wart with a Water Bottle to create an Awkward Potion. Then brew the Awkward Potion with Blaze Powder in a brewing stand. The resulting potion increases melee damage by 3 for 3 minutes. Add Glowstone Dust to create Strength II (doubles damage boost) or Redstone to extend duration to 8 minutes.

How do you make a Potion of Healing?

Create a Potion of Healing by brewing a Glistering Melon Slice with an Awkward Potion. The Glistering Melon Slice is crafted with 8 Gold Nuggets surrounding a Melon Slice. This potion instantly restores 4 hearts (2 full hearts). Brew it with Glowstone Dust to create Healing II, which restores 8 hearts (4 full hearts). This is one of the most essential potions for survival gameplay.

How do you make a Potion of Invisibility?

The Potion of Invisibility requires two brewing steps. First, make a Potion of Night Vision by brewing a Golden Carrot with an Awkward Potion. Then brew the Night Vision potion with a Fermented Spider Eye to corrupt it into Invisibility. The potion lasts 3 minutes (or 8 minutes with Redstone). Note that while invisible, your armor and held items remain visible, so remove armor for complete invisibility.

How do you make a Potion of Fire Resistance?

Brew Magma Cream with an Awkward Potion to create a Potion of Fire Resistance. Magma Cream is obtained by combining Slime Ball and Blaze Powder, or by killing Magma Cubes in the Nether. This potion grants complete immunity to fire and lava damage for 3 minutes. Extend the duration to 8 minutes by adding Redstone Dust. Essential for Nether exploration and lava-related activities.

How do you make a Splash Potion?

Convert any drinkable potion into a Splash Potion by brewing it with Gunpowder in a brewing stand. Gunpowder is dropped by Creepers, Ghasts, and Witches. Splash potions can be thrown like snowballs and will affect any entities within a 4-block radius when they land. The effects are typically 75% as strong as drinking the potion directly. Splash potions are essential for combat and supporting allies.

How do you make a Lingering Potion?

Lingering Potions are created by brewing Dragon's Breath with a Splash Potion. Dragon's Breath is collected by using empty glass bottles on the purple particle clouds created by the Ender Dragon's breath attack in the End. Lingering potions create a cloud effect that lasts for about 30 seconds, applying the potion effect to any entity that walks through it. These are primarily used to craft Tipped Arrows.

How do you make a Potion of Regeneration?

Brew a Ghast Tear with an Awkward Potion to create a Potion of Regeneration. Ghast Tears are dropped by Ghasts in the Nether when killed. The potion restores health gradually over 45 seconds. Add Redstone to extend the duration to 2 minutes, or Glowstone to create Regeneration II which heals faster but only lasts 22 seconds. One of the most valuable healing potions for extended combat.

How do you make a Potion of Speed (Swiftness)?

Create a Potion of Swiftness by brewing Sugar with an Awkward Potion. Sugar is crafted from Sugar Cane. The potion increases movement speed by 20% for 3 minutes. Add Glowstone Dust for Swiftness II (40% speed increase) or Redstone for 8-minute duration. Perfect for travel, PvP combat, and escaping dangerous situations. One of the most commonly used potions in the game.

What ingredients do you need for brewing potions?

Essential brewing ingredients include: Nether Wart (for Awkward Potions), Blaze Powder (fuel and Strength ingredient), Glowstone Dust (enhancement), Redstone (duration extension), Gunpowder (splash potions), and Fermented Spider Eye (corruption). Common effect ingredients: Glistering Melon (Healing), Ghast Tear (Regeneration), Golden Carrot (Night Vision), Magma Cream (Fire Resistance), Sugar (Swiftness), Spider Eye (Poison), Rabbit's Foot (Leaping), Pufferfish (Water Breathing), and Phantom Membrane (Slow Falling).

How long do brewing potions take in Minecraft?

Each brewing cycle takes exactly 20 seconds to complete. During this time, bubbles will appear from the bottles into the brewing stand, indicating the brewing process is active. You can brew up to three potions simultaneously in a single brewing stand by placing up to three bottles in the stand. Make sure the brewing stand has Blaze Powder fuel before starting - each Blaze Powder fuels 20 brewing operations.

Can you brew potions in Bedrock Edition?

Yes, potion brewing works almost identically in Bedrock Edition compared to Java Edition. The main differences are: Bedrock has an exclusive Decay Potion (Wither effect) that's unobtainable in survival, and some minor timing differences. All the recipes, ingredients, and mechanics covered in this guide work for both Minecraft Bedrock Edition (Console, Mobile, Windows 10) and Java Edition. The brewing stand interface and crafting recipes are the same across all platforms.

What is an Awkward Potion and why do you need it?

An Awkward Potion is the base ingredient for brewing most effect potions in Minecraft. It's created by brewing Nether Wart with a Water Bottle. While it has no effects on its own, it's the essential starting point for brewing positive-effect potions like Strength, Healing, Speed, Fire Resistance, Night Vision, Regeneration, Leaping, Water Breathing, and Slow Falling. Without Awkward Potions, you can only brew a few basic potions like Weakness (made directly from Water Bottle).
