Minecraft Banner Guide

How banners work in Java Edition

Every banner starts as a dyed base color — craft one from six wool (or a colored wool block) plus a stick, or dye a plain white banner in a crafting grid. After that, you add up to six pattern layers in a loom. Each layer combines one pattern with one dye color. Patterns stack from bottom to top: the first layer you add sits underneath later layers, exactly as this designer shows in the preview.

This tool covers all 37 standard loom patterns available in modern Java: stripes, crosses, halves, corners, borders, gradients, bricks, and the six charge icons (creeper, skull, flower, thing, globe, and piglin). Pattern names and registry IDs match vanilla so copied /give commands work without edits.

Using the loom in survival

  1. Craft a loom from two string and two planks.
  2. Place your banner in the left slot.
  3. Add dye in the color slot for geometric patterns, or a banner pattern item for charge icons.
  4. Pick the pattern from the list and take the result — it becomes the new input banner for the next layer.
  5. Repeat until you reach six patterns or finish your design.

The Loom steps panel in the tool mirrors this process in order. If you play on Minecraft 1.20.5 or newer, paste the generated /give command instead to spawn the finished banner instantly in creative or on a server where you have permission.

Pattern types at a glance

  • Stripes & halves — bottom/top/left/right/center stripes, small vertical stripes, and half-banner splits (vertical, horizontal, and inverted variants).
  • Shapes — crosses, chevrons, triangles, diagonals, circle (roundel), and rhombus (lozenge).
  • Corners & edges — quarter squares in each corner, plain border, curly border, and gradient fades.
  • Textures — brick (field masoned) pattern tinted with any dye.
  • Charge icons— creeper, skull, flower, Mojang logo ("thing"), globe, and piglin. These need their matching banner pattern item in survival (e.g. creeper head → creeper charge).

Preview accuracy

The live preview uses official Minecraft banner pattern textures — the same greyscale masks the game tints with dye — composited in layer order on a 20×40 pixel banner face. That is the same data the client uses for standing banners, so creeper faces, gradients, and stripe positions align with in-game results. Shields use a related but slightly compressed layout, so shield previews in the world can differ by a pixel or two on intricate designs.

Share links & export

Click Share design to copy a URL with your full color and pattern stack encoded in the link. Send it to friends, embed it in a build doc, or bookmark your faction flag. Use PNG to download a pixel image for Discord, planet Minecraft posts, or mock-ups in the pixel art generator.

How to use this designer

  1. Pick a banner color — the base dye (16 colors, same as in-game).
  2. Choose a pattern and pattern color, then click Add a pattern to the banner.
  3. Reorder layers with the arrow buttons if needed — order must match the loom stack.
  4. Copy the /give command or follow the loom steps to craft it in survival.

Frequently asked questions

How many patterns can a Minecraft banner have?
Java Edition banners support one base color plus up to six pattern layers — the same limit as a loom.
Can I share my banner design?
Yes. Click Share design to copy a URL. Anyone opening the link sees your exact colors and pattern stack.
Does the /give command work in my world?
The command uses modern Java item components (1.20.5+). On older versions, use the loom steps list to recreate the design manually.
Is the preview accurate compared to in-game?
Yes. The preview composites official Minecraft banner pattern textures with the same dye colors Java uses, so geometric patterns, gradients, and charge icons (creeper, skull, flower, etc.) match what you see on a standing banner in-game.
Can I put this design on a shield?
You can apply the same pattern stack to a shield in a loom, but shield patterns are rendered on a slightly smaller canvas in-game, so very fine details can look a tiny bit different from this banner preview.
Do charge patterns need special items?
In survival, creeper charge, skull charge, flower charge, thing (Mojang), globe, and piglin patterns require their banner pattern item in the loom. In creative or with /give, you can apply any pattern with dye alone.

This tool is for Minecraft Java Edition. Bedrock Edition uses a different banner system and command syntax. Newer trial-chamber patterns such as flow and guster are not in the classic 37-pattern loom set yet; we may add them in a future update.
