Bedrock Render Distance & Lag Fixes

Most Bedrock stutter isn’t “bad Wi‑Fi” — it’s too many chunks simulating on a phone or Switch. Tune distance first, cosmetics second.

Quick starting points
DeviceRenderSimulation
Nintendo Switch8–124–6
Phones / tablets6–124–6
Xbox / PlayStation12–206–8
Windows Bedrock (decent PC)16–288–12

Max sliders vary by platform and world type. If the slider won’t go higher, that’s a hard device cap — not a bug.

Where to change it

  1. Open Settings → Video.
  2. Adjust Render Distance and Simulation Distance (names can vary slightly by version).
  3. Apply, return to the world, and fly your usual routes — bases and farms, not empty ocean.

Render distance vs simulation distance

Render distance
How far terrain draws. Lower = fewer chunks to draw = better FPS, shorter view.
Simulation distance
How far crops, mobs, redstone, and hoppers keep ticking. This is the silent FPS killer on Switch and phones.

Rule of thumb: keep simulation ≤ render, and on weak hardware bias toward lower simulation even if you want a prettier view.

Graphics options that actually help

  • Turn off or lower Beautiful Skies, Clouds, Fancy Leaves, and extra anti-aliasing.
  • Disable unused Marketplace “shader” packs and huge texture packs while troubleshooting.
  • Close background apps on phones; docked Switch still throttles under heat.
  • On Windows, update GPU drivers; RTX packs need supported hardware or they hurt more than help.

When settings aren’t enough

  • Kill idle iron farms / villager trading halls while exploring far away.
  • Avoid carpeting the spawn chunks with hoppers and command-block clocks.
  • Heavy behavior packs on Realms amplify lag for everyone — see the Realms addon guide.
  • Java players have a separate optimization path — performance guide.

FAQ

What render distance should I use on Nintendo Switch?

Start around 8–12 chunks. Push higher only if the world is light (few entities, no heavy addons). Switch heats and throttles — lower simulation distance if you still stutter.

What’s a good render distance on mobile?

Phones vary wildly. Mid-range Android/iPhone often feel best at 6–10. Flagships can try 12–16. Drop fancy graphics and beautiful skies before you crush render distance to 4.

Render distance vs simulation distance?

Render distance is how far you see. Simulation distance is how far the game ticks farms, mobs, and redstone. High simulation on weak devices tanks FPS even if the view looks fine.

Why is Bedrock laggy with friends?

Host device does the work. If the Realm/local host is a phone or Switch, everyone feels it. Fewer loaded chunks, fewer hopper clocks, and less particle spam help more than another texture pack.

Do shaders exist on Bedrock?

Not like Java Iris/Sodium. Marketplace “shaders” and RTX (supported Windows/hardware) are different systems. Fancy lighting packs can still cost FPS on console/mobile.
