How to Change Your Minecraft Username on Bedrock
On Bedrock, your in-game name is your Xbox Gamertag. Change that on your Microsoft account — Minecraft will show the new name after you refresh sign-in.
Go to xbox.com → profile → edit Gamertag → save → in Minecraft Settings → Account → Sign out → reopen and sign in.
First modern Gamertag change is often free; later changes may cost money. This is not the Java profile name.
Change Gamertag on the web (all platforms)
Best method for phone, tablet, Windows Bedrock, and consoles signed in with Microsoft:
- Open xbox.com (or Xbox account profile) and sign in with the same Microsoft account you use in Minecraft.
- Open your profile (profile icon / My profile).
- Choose edit / change Gamertag (pencil next to the name).
- Enter a new name, check availability, read any fee warning, then confirm.
Rules (typical): short name, spaces allowed, can’t start with a number, must be unique. If taken, try a different spelling — Xbox may suggest a suffix.
Change on an Xbox console
- Press the Xbox button → Profile & system → your profile.
- My profile → Customize profile (or similar).
- Select Gamertag → edit → save.
PlayStation / Switch / mobile still use the Microsoft Gamertag when you’re signed into Minecraft with that account — changing it on Xbox.com updates those devices after a re-login.
If Minecraft still shows the old name
- Confirm the new Gamertag appears on xbox.com outside Minecraft.
- In Minecraft: Settings → Account → Sign out.
- Fully close Minecraft (swipe away / quit), don’t just leave it in the background.
- Relaunch and sign back in with the same Microsoft account.
- On Windows: sign out of the Xbox app too, restart the PC, then open Minecraft again.
Propagation is usually quick but not always instant. If other Xbox games show the new name and Minecraft doesn’t, account sign-out + full restart almost always clears the cache.
Bedrock vs Java usernames
FAQ
How do you change your Minecraft username on Bedrock?
Bedrock uses your Xbox Gamertag as your in-game name. Change it on the Xbox / Microsoft account profile (xbox.com or account.xbox.com), not inside the Minecraft menus. After it saves, sign out and back into Minecraft so the new name appears.
Is changing a Bedrock username free?
Microsoft usually gives one free modern Gamertag change. Extra changes often cost money. Availability and pricing are controlled by Xbox — check the change screen before you confirm.
Why didn’t my new Gamertag show up in Minecraft?
The game can cache the old name. Confirm the Gamertag changed on xbox.com, then in Minecraft go to Settings → Account → Sign out, fully close the app, reopen, and sign in again. On Windows, also sign out of the Xbox app if needed.
Does this work on PE, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and Windows?
Yes if you play Bedrock signed in with a Microsoft account — the Gamertag is shared. Change it once online and it applies everywhere that account is used. If a console uses a different platform ID without Microsoft sign-in, that platform’s nickname rules apply instead.
Is Bedrock username the same as Java?
No. Java profile names are changed at minecraft.net / the Microsoft Minecraft profile. Bedrock uses the Xbox Gamertag. Same Microsoft account can have different display names per edition.
What are the Gamertag rules?
Modern Gamertags are short (commonly up to 12 characters including spaces), can’t start with a number, and must be unique. If a name is taken, Xbox may offer a numbered suffix.
Can I change my username from inside Minecraft Bedrock?
There isn’t a separate “Minecraft-only” nickname. Edit the Xbox Gamertag on Microsoft/Xbox account pages (or Xbox console profile settings). Minecraft just displays whatever Gamertag is on the account.
