Is This Minecraft Name Taken? — Java & Bedrock
Check a Java Edition username or a Bedrock / Xbox gamertag. Java names map to Mojang UUIDs (3–16 characters). Bedrock names are Xbox gamertags (spaces and #suffix allowed). A blank result is not a guarantee you can claim the name.
How this check works
- Choose Java or Bedrock / Xbox.
- Enter a Java username (3–16 letters, numbers, or underscores) or an Xbox gamertag (up to 32 characters, spaces and #suffix OK).
- Java: we ask Mojang whether the name maps to a UUID. Bedrock: we ask whether that Xbox gamertag currently has an XUID.
- If it exists, it is taken — open the full player lookup. If not, nobody is using it on that edition right now.
Java username rules
- 3 to 16 characters
- Letters A–Z, numbers, and underscore (_) only
- No spaces, periods, or other symbols
- Java and Bedrock names are separate — having one does not reserve the other
A blank public lookup is not a guarantee you can claim the name. Blocked words, the 37-day hold after a name change, and launcher-side checks can still reject it.
Bedrock / Xbox gamertag rules
- Bedrock uses Xbox gamertags, not Mojang Java usernames
- Modern tags can include spaces and a #number suffix
- This checker accepts 1–32 characters (Xbox’s own form can be stricter)
- Extra Xbox gamertag changes often cost money — there is no Java-style 37-day drop
No Xbox profile found does not mean you can create that gamertag. Microsoft reserved names and suffix rules still apply. Confirm in Xbox / Minecraft settings while signed in.
When does a Java Minecraft name become free? (37 days, not 28)
This 37-day hold is Java only. You can change your own Java username once every 30 days. The name you leave behind is not immediately up for grabs. Mojang’s hold is 37 days total — a common mix-up is “28 days.”
Days 0–30
The old name is locked. Nobody else can claim it. You also cannot change username again until this 30-day cooldown ends.
Days 30–37
A 7-day window where only the original owner can take the old name back (once their 30-day change cooldown is over).
After 37 days
If they did not reclaim it, the name can be claimed by anyone who is allowed to change username. That is when “sniping” happens.
Mojang does not publish when a specific name will drop. The public profile API only answers “does this name map to a UUID right now?” Sites that show a countdown keep their own history of when a name stopped resolving. We do not have that database, and the official drop check only works while you are logged into minecraft.net.
Username questions
Does this work for Bedrock / Xbox?
Yes. Switch to Bedrock / Xbox and enter a gamertag. That checks whether an Xbox profile currently uses the name. Java and Bedrock names are separate systems.
If it says taken, can I still get the name?
Not while that profile exists. On Java, the 37-day hold only starts after the owner changes to a different username. On Bedrock, Xbox handles gamertag changes (extra changes often cost money).
If it says no profile is using it, can I claim it now?
Try it in the launcher (Java) or Xbox / Minecraft settings (Bedrock) while signed in. A public miss can mean never used, already dropped, still in Java’s 37-day hold, or blocked by Microsoft’s filters.
When does an old Minecraft username become available?
Java only: 37 days after the owner changes away from it — 30 days locked for everyone, then 7 days when only they can reclaim it, then it opens to everyone. It is not 28 days. Bedrock / Xbox gamertags do not use that 37-day rule.
Can this tool tell me the exact drop time?
No. Mojang has no public drop-date API, and Xbox does not publish gamertag drop times either. Our checker only sees if a name currently maps to a Java UUID or an Xbox XUID.
Is it safe to check someone’s username?
Yes. This is public Mojang profile data and public Xbox gamertag lookup. It cannot access passwords, emails, or Microsoft logins, and it does not put an account at risk.
Why did a valid-looking name fail?
Java names cannot be shorter than 3 characters or longer than 16, and they cannot include spaces or symbols other than underscore. Xbox gamertags can include spaces and a #suffix, but not \ / < >.
