Updated for Minecraft Java 26.2 · Works on Bedrock too

How to Cure a Zombie Villager in Minecraft

Trap → Splash Potion of Weakness → Golden Apple → wait 3–5 minutes. Curing still works the same in 26.2, and it unlocks permanent cheaper trades.

Quick start (30-second summary)
  1. Trap a zombie villager under a roof (sunlight burns them).
  2. Hit it with Splash Potion of Weakness (purple particles).
  3. Use a regular Golden Apple on it (red particles / shaking).
  4. Wait about 3–5 minutes with the chunk loaded.
  5. Give the cured villager a job site and start trading.

What you need

Required

  • Splash Potion of Weakness (or Weakness arrow / lingering)
  • Golden Apple (normal — not enchanted)
  • Roof / enclosure so it doesn’t burn

Strongly recommended

  • Name tag (craftable since Tiny Takeover 26.1)
  • Boat or minecart to lock movement
  • Iron bars + bed nearby (Java speed assist)
  • Armor / shield while trapping

Zombie villagers appear when a villager is killed by a zombie (more often on Hard), during village zombie activity, or as natural zombie variants. Find villages faster with the seed map / village finder.

Step-by-step curing

1. Locate and trap

Corner the zombie villager with dirt/cobble or shove it into a boat. Build a roof before daytime. Light nearby floors so more hostiles don’t pile in. Remove Thorns armor if you might accidentally hit it.

2. Apply Weakness

Throw Splash Potion of Weakness so purple particles appear. Duration is long enough for the next step. Alternatives: Arrow of Weakness, Lingering Weakness, a witch’s throw, or a Parched (Mounts of Mayhem desert undead) shooting Weakness arrows.

3. Feed a Golden Apple

With Weakness active, use a regular Golden Apple on the zombie villager. Red particles and shaking mean curing started. Weakness is replaced by Strength for the duration of the conversion.

Enchanted Golden Apples do not start a cure. Don’t waste one.

4. Wait it out

Expect roughly 3–5 minutes. Stay close enough that the chunk stays loaded. Don’t attack the curing villager.

5. Protect and employ

Once human again, fence it in, place a bed and workstation for its profession, and trade once to lock offers. See mob spawning if you need to keep the hall spawn-proofed.

Brew Splash Potion of Weakness

Weakness is special: it does not need Nether Wart. That makes early-game curing realistic before you have a full brewing setup in the Nether.

  1. Water Bottle + Fermented Spider Eye → Potion of Weakness
  2. Potion of Weakness + Gunpowder → Splash Potion of Weakness
  3. Optional: Splash + Dragon's Breath → Lingering (area cure setups)

Fermented spider eye = spider eye + brown mushroom + sugar. Full brew chains: potion brewing guide.

Speed up curing on Java (accurate numbers)

Many guides claim iron bars + a bed drop cure time to ~30 seconds. That is not how the game works. The base timer is still ~3–5 minutes. Each game tick, there is a small chance to look for accelerants in a 9×9×9 cube centered on the villager: iron bars and beds (each bed half counts). Up to 14 matching blocks can contribute, for roughly a ~4% average speedup when maxed—not a 10× speedup.

  • Place iron bars and/or beds within that 9×9×9 volume.
  • Workstations do not accelerate curing (they’re for jobs after conversion).
  • Still worth doing in a curing cell—just don’t expect a half-minute miracle.
Trade discounts after curing

On Java, curing grants a permanent discount to the player who administered the cure if the villager had (or gets) a profession. Nearby villagers can receive smaller temporary/gossip discounts. Curing the same villager over and over does not keep stacking bigger permanent discounts beyond that first cure—another common myth.

Practical tip: cure librarians / toolsmiths / armorers you actually want, then protect the hall. Zombify + re-cure is still useful when converting a fresh zombie villager into a discounted trader, not as an infinite price glitch.

Common mistakes
  • Using the Golden Apple before Weakness is applied.
  • Trying an Enchanted Golden Apple.
  • Letting sunlight burn the mob mid-cure.
  • Walking far away so the chunk unloads / the mob despawns (name-tag it).
  • Expecting 30-second cures or infinite stacked discounts from repeat cures.
  • Killing iron golems that aggro while you’re trying to save the villager.

Through Minecraft 26.2

Curing mechanics are unchanged in Chaos Cubed (26.2). Tiny Takeover (26.1) helps because name tags are craftable, so securing a cure in the field is easier. For update context see Village & Pillage (villager overhaul) and 26.2 notes.

Zombie villager FAQ
What do I need to cure a zombie villager?
A way to apply Weakness (usually a Splash Potion of Weakness or Arrow of Weakness) and a regular Golden Apple. Enchanted Golden Apples do not work. Optional: name tag, boat, roof, and iron bars/beds (Java) to slightly speed curing.
How long does it take to cure a zombie villager?
On Java, the timer starts between about 3 and 5 minutes (3600–6000 ticks). Iron bars and beds in a 9×9×9 area around the villager can shave a small amount of time off (roughly a few percent on average)—not down to 30 seconds.
Do cured villagers give permanent trade discounts?
Yes. The player who cures them gets permanent discounts on that villager’s trades (Java). Nearby villagers can pick up smaller gossip discounts. Curing the same villager again does not stack extra permanent discounts beyond the first cure.
Why won’t my zombie villager cure?
Weakness must be active before you use the Golden Apple. Use a normal Golden Apple (not enchanted). Keep the chunk loaded, block sunlight, and name-tag the mob so it doesn’t despawn. Peaceful removes hostiles so you can’t start a cure there.
Can I use a normal Potion of Weakness (not splash)?
Drinkable Weakness won’t hit the mob. Brew Water Bottle + Fermented Spider Eye (no Nether Wart), then add Gunpowder for Splash. You can also use Lingering Weakness, tipped Weakness arrows, or (in newer versions) a Parched shooting Weakness arrows.
How do I get a Golden Apple?
Craft one apple + 8 gold ingots, or loot chests in structures. Enchanted Golden Apples cannot start a cure.
What’s different between Java and Bedrock curing?
The Weakness + Golden Apple steps are the same. Java speeds curing slightly with nearby iron bars/beds and applies personal discounts to the curing player. Bedrock discount/gossip rules differ; check your edition for trading hall designs.
Did Minecraft 26.1 or 26.2 change curing?
Chaos Cubed (26.2) did not change the cure recipe. Tiny Takeover (26.1) made name tags craftable, which helps stop despawn while curing. Mounts of Mayhem added Parched, which can apply Weakness via arrows.
