How to Get Mending in Minecraft 26.2
Mending is a treasure enchantment — it never appears on an enchanting table. The reliable way is a librarian villager. Reroll their lectern until they sell a Mending book, trade once to lock it, then repair gear with XP forever.
- Trap an unemployed villager (or break their current job site).
- Place a lectern so they become a librarian.
- Open trades. If the enchanted book is not Mending, break the lectern.
- Replace the lectern and check again. Repeat until Mending shows up.
- Buy the book (or any trade) once so the offer cannot reroll.
Optional: cure a zombie villager first so the book costs a handful of emeralds instead of 20–30+.
Get Mending from a librarian
Librarians can sell a random enchanted book at novice through master. Mending is allowed in that pool on normal Java and Bedrock worlds. You do not need a maxed villager — a brand-new librarian can offer Mending as their first book.
Do not trade until you see Mending. Any trade locks the villager’s current offers. Breaking the lectern while they are still unlocked rerolls the book.
Need a village? Paste your seed into the village finder (Java) or turn on the Villages layer on the Bedrock seed map.
Trade rebalance experiment
If you enabled Villager Trade Rebalance, Mending is locked to swamp librarians only. In that setup, find a swamp village (or convert a villager in a swamp biome) and reroll that lectern. Default 26.2 worlds without the experiment still use the classic “any librarian can roll Mending” rules.

Job site blocks convert an unemployed villager. Nitwits never trade. This is the useful vanilla set for survival — not every buy/sell pair, just what people actually hunt.

Enchanted gear from armorers, toolsmiths, and weaponsmiths is random — you still reroll by breaking the workstation before the first trade. Librarians are the Mending source.
Other ways to get Mending
- Fishing — treasure chests in the fishing table can roll enchanted books. Luck of the Sea helps a little. Still much slower than a librarian.
- Structure loot — ancient cities are the best book chests; also mansions, strongholds, mineshafts, outposts, and some trial vaults.
- Trading hall — once you have Mending, keep that librarian safe. Combine the book onto tools, armor, elytra, and maces in an anvil.
- What is the fastest way to get Mending in Minecraft?
- Reroll a librarian. Place a lectern next to an unemployed villager, check the enchanted book trade, and break the lectern if it is not Mending. Repeat until Mending appears, then trade once to lock it. Cure a zombie villager first if you want cheap emerald prices.
- Can villagers sell Mending?
- Yes on Java and Bedrock in normal worlds. Librarians can offer Mending as an enchanted book. If the Villager Trade Rebalance experiment is on, only swamp librarians sell Mending.
- How much does a Mending book cost?
- Usually about 10–38 emeralds for Mending I, because it is a treasure enchantment. Curing the librarian as a zombie villager drops that to a few emeralds.
- Can you get Mending from fishing?
- Yes, but it is slow. Treasure loot can include enchanted books, and Mending is one of many possible enchants. A librarian is far more reliable.
- Where else does Mending spawn as loot?
- Enchanted books can appear in ancient cities, woodland mansions, strongholds, mineshafts, pillager outposts, desert temples, and some trial chamber / vault loot. Still rarer than buying from a librarian.
- Does Mending work on Bedrock?
- Yes. Same idea: librarian lectern rerolls, fishing, and structure loot. Bedrock also lets you combine Mending on an anvil like Java.
- Can I put Mending on a sword that already has other enchants?
- Yes, in an anvil, as long as the item is not “Too Expensive!” from prior work. Mending is compatible with almost every tool, weapon, and armor enchant except other mending-incompatible edge cases — it does not conflict with Unbreaking or Protection.
