How smash damage works
- Smash triggers after falling at least 1.5 blocks (and cancels your fall damage on a successful hit).
- Bonus: +4 HP/block for the first 3, +2 for blocks 4–8, +1 after that — with no maximum fall distance.
- Density adds +0.5 HP per block fallen per level (smash only). Breach cuts armor effectiveness by 15% per level. They cannot share a mace.
- Smash hits are normally critical: (base + Strength − Weakness + smash) × 1.5, then enchantments.
Quick takeaways
- Density for raw smash burst (ledges, Wind Charges, Wind Burst chains). Breach for armored PvP.
- A 10-block fall is +24 smash before Density or crit — then Density V adds another +25.
- Mace wins with height; spear wins with momentum (sprint, horse, nautilus charge).
- Wind Burst does not add smash damage — it relaunches you so you can fall again.
- Smash bonus never caps: past 8 blocks you still gain +1 HP per block forever.
FAQ
How is mace smash damage calculated?
Fall at least 1.5 blocks, then add +4 HP per block for the first 3 blocks, +2 for the next 5, and +1 for every block after 8. Density adds 0.5 HP × fall distance × level. Smash attacks are usually critical hits (1.5× on base + smash).
Does smash damage max out after a certain fall height?
No. Java Edition has no smash damage ceiling — after 8 blocks you keep gaining +1 HP per block forever, and Density keeps adding 0.5 × level × fall distance. The calculator slider goes to 200 blocks for convenience; type a higher value if you need it.
Density or Breach?
Density scales smash damage with fall height — best for PvE and vertical plays. Breach reduces the target’s armor effectiveness by 15% per level (up to 60% at IV) — better against full diamond/netherite in flat arenas. They are mutually exclusive.
Mace vs spear — which wins in PvP?
Different jobs. Mace needs fall height (or Wind Charge / Wind Burst chaining). Spear charge damage scales with relative velocity — sprint, mounts, and nautilus reward momentum and reach (4.5 blocks). Use this calculator’s comparison panel with the same armor target.
Does Wind Burst increase smash damage?
No. Wind Burst launches you upward after a smash so you can fall again. The calculator shows an approximate relaunch height (~7 blocks per level) as a planning aid only.
Is this Java or Bedrock?
Java Edition smash and spear formulas. Bedrock values can differ slightly.
